Fissures are cuts an anal opening caused because of passage of hard stools. And yes it can occur in kids and infants also. In fact, it is very commonly seen in children below 1 year of age. This article will help you understand the problem in a better way.

 

When to suspect an anal fissure in kids?

- If the baby cries and show discomfort when passing stool.

- If there is blood may on the surface of stool.

- Older children may avoid passing stool to avoid the pain of the anal fissure.

- There may be a visible cut, wound, tear or split skin along the anal opening.

- Itching is also a sign of anal region.

 

Your kid is prone to develop an Anal Fissure -

  • If your kid passes hard stools.
  • If your kid tries to pass stool in standing position.
  • If your kid resists passing stools.
  • If your kid strains a lot while passing stool.
  • If your kid develops diarrhoea on a regular basis.

 

How to diagnose fissures in kids

It can be easily diagnosed by physical examination done by an expert. DO NOT try to diagnose at home as there are many other conditions associated with fissures and anal regions that may need immediate medical attention. So if you suspect your kid to have some problem at bottom go to an expert and get proper check up done.

 

 

Treatment of anal fissures in kids

Tear in baby's bottom treatment can be achieved by taking following measures -

  • Apply oil at anal region 3-4 times a day. Cocunut oil may be used.
  • Avoid constipation.
  • Make sure your kid have appropriate amount of drinking water.
  • Give proper toilet training to your kid.
  • Avoid giving junk food like noodles, cold drinks etc.
  • You can also use warm water fomentation to provide pain relief.
  • If the baby is on mother feed, the mother needs to take care of her diet.

 

When to visit a doctor?

You should not delay doctor's visit if your kid cries while passing stools and is not getting relief by general measures mentioned above.

Surgery is reserved only for high end cases and is required in a very few patients. Fissures in kids can be very well managed through medicines.
